Low Calorie Bottle Gourd Soup

This nutritious soup is a must try for those who are looking to shed some extra calories. Bottle gourd is extremely low in saturated fats. It contains essential nutrients like Vitamin C, K, A, E, iron, folate, magnesium and potassium. Try it and relish the goodness of bottle gourd.


  • Bottle gourd – ½ small, diced
  • Moong dal – ¼ cup
  • Onion – ½ small, diced
  • Garlic – 1 clove
  • Green Chilli – ½
  • Lemon juice – ½ tbsp
  • Coriander leaves – 1 tbsp, chopped
  • Cumin seeds – ¼ tsp
  • Turmeric powder – a pinch
  • Salt – ½ tsp
  • Black pepper powder – a pinch
  • Oil – 1.5 tsp


  • Heat 1.5 tsp oil in a pan. Add ¼ tsp cumin seeds and let it splutter.
  • Add the diced onion and saute till it turns translucent.
  • Add the diced bottle gourd, garlic, green chilli, moong dal, lemon juice, coriander leaves, salt, black pepper powder and turmeric powder. Stir well for 2-3 mins on medium flame.
  • Add enough water and bring to a boil. Let it boil for 1-2 mins.
  • From the pan, transfer the mixture into a pressure cooker. Pressure cook for 2-3 whistles. When the pressure settles, set aside to cool.
  • Once it cools down, transfer the mixture into a mixer jar and blend into a soup-like consistency.
  • Transfer the soup mixture into a pan and add some more water and boil for 3 mins.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.
